Lobster Diorama

Private commission

Lobster Diorama: a lobster-like preacher and his followers on top of a rock, printed in UV resin

A private client commissioned a diorama of an unusual scene: a lobster-like creature preaching in a city park to his followers.

He stands at the top of a cliff edge. Members of the public walk towards him across the park, past benches and street lamps.

Spike TM 3D printed the scene in UV resin and set it in a landscape of foam and wood. The finished piece measures 60 x 40 x 35 cm.

Resin was the right process for figures at this scale. It holds the fine detail in faces, clothing and posture that a viewer reads up close.

Every figure was hand painted by Antoni Mere, so the scene reads as one world rather than a set of printed parts.

The scene, up close

Peter Roden's film moves through the park at figure height, past the benches and lamps, up to the cliff edge.
